Arya and Anushka Shetty New South Film Varna( Irandam Ulagam) Movie Review:

The promos of director Selvaraghavan's Telugu movie Varna starring Arya and Anushka Shetty in leads, had rocked the viewers' expectations to the sky high. But the movie, which has hit the screens today (November 22), fails to reach them. Instead of entertaining the audience, the film proves to be an unbearable torture in many places. It completely lacks entertainment quotient.

Story:

Varna has two plots. One story happens on earth in which Ramya (Anushka Shetty) falls in love with Madhu Balakrishna (Arya). Ramya proposes him, but he rejects her love. By the time he realises her love and starts chasing her, she accepts a marriage another proposal. The second story happens on a strange planet, which is a place where people have not experienced love. Here Mahendra (Arya) falls in love with Varna (Anushka) and marries her. But the circumstances lead them to breakup, thereby forcing Mahendra to go to Earth, where he saves Madhu. What happens next will form the crux of the story.

Artists Performance:

Arya has played double role in Varna and he has delivered an awesome performance for both. He looks sunning with chiseled body. Especially, he is sure to rock the viewers in action scenes. His chemistry with Anushka Shetty is a treat to watch on screen. Like Arya, Anushka has double roles in Varna. She has huge scope for performance and she has done a brilliant job. More than her glam factor, her acting skills impresses the audience. She also impresses viewers with her sword-fighting scenes in the film.

Technical and Other Departments:

Varna has rich production values and its special effects are the main highlight in the technical front. The Hollywood technicians, who have earlier worked on projects like Avatar, have done VFX works for the movie and these effects are simply amazing. Other than visual effects, the music is another highlight of the movie. Harris Jayraj's soundtracks are good, but placement of a couple of songs is wrong and illogical. Anirudh's background score is one of the big assets of the film Varna.
Varna has been shot in exotic locales of Russia, Georgia, Brazil and a few other parts of India. Ramji has handled the camera work well. His cinematography is also a big asset of the film and it is a visual treat for the viewers. Varna has several fight scenes, which have been choreographed very well. The sword-fighting scenes of Arya and Anushka are simply superb and sure to rock the action lovers. Other technical departments like dance choreography, art direction, costume designs and makeup have also done commendable job. But Kola Bhaskar could have bettered the viewing experience by trimming the dragging scenes.

Movie Analysis:

Varna is a romantic fantasy film and Arya and Anushka Shetty's brilliant performances are the main highlight of the film. Selva's symbolic script, amazing visual effects, Anirudh's background score, Harris Jayaraj's tunes, Ramji's cinematography, well-choreographed action, beautiful locales, art direction and costumes are its other attractions. But its slow-paced narration, which tests the patience, mars the beauty of the movie. Another big drawback is that it lacks comedy quotient.

Selvaraghavan has chosen an interesting story, but what he lacks in the script is the energy to take you on joy ride. Varna has two stories loosely connected with each other and the narration constantly keep lurching between the two, which makes it difficult for a layman to understand the story. Another difficulty for common man is its symbolic narration. It has several twists and turns, but many of them are predictable. The movie begins with a slow narration and it drags till few minutes before the end of the first half. There are a few interesting moments before the interval bang. After the interval, the story runs in to a complex world of beats, which is little tough to understand, but is interesting. However, the dragging narration gets extended to the second half too. The climax is another hard nut for a common man.

Final View:

Varna has everything going in a right way, but the confusing story and dragging narration kills the interest of the viewers. If you are going to watch it for entertainment, then this is not your cup of tea.
