Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone New Bollywood film Ram Leela Movie Review:
Little, the greatest bard in history Shakespeare, would've known that there'd come another great man in the 21st century who would adapt his 16th century epic romantic tragedy Romeo & Juliet with as much romanticism as he had while writing it. There's been not one but two more attempts in the recent past to reenact the iconic play (Ishaqzaade and Issaq) however, none have been this complex in structure, dramatic is narrative and stunning in visuals as Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela.
Story:
Set in Gujarat, the film opens to showcase the warring clans of Rajadi and Saneda who declare war at the drop of a hat. Their enmity is inherent, going on since generations and both gun-toting parties are always at each other's throat. Amidst such a scenario do two star-crossed lovers Ram and Leela meet. It's love at first sight but they are doomed for belonging to the either sides of the warring kin. What happens then? Do they meet? Is there a happily ever after? If you've read Romeo & Juliet you know what it is but if you haven't you've got to watch the film to know what happens.
Artists Performance:
All the characters are well-etched and leave an impression on the viewer's mind. Ranveer Singh is dynamic and delivers an award-winning performance. Deepika Padukone is simply fantastic. Playing the part of a spirited gun-toting girl, she is not the regular timid, decorous, withdrawn Hindi film heroine. She makes a towering impact every time she appears on screen.
The rest of the cast is equally brilliant right from Supriya Pathak who plays Dhankhor to the evil Gulshan Devaiyya, the protective brother played by Sharad Kelkar and last but not the least Richa Chadha who fits her role to the T. Priyanka Chopra's item song is quite a dampner in the film having being inserted just for the commercial sakes. And that also brings us to the music composed by the filmmaker himself. There are way too many songs in the film to count, the number of which could've been reduced to make the runtime less tedious.
Technical and Other Departments:
Bhansali creates a web of romance, hooliganism and rivalry, all woven beautifully and with great elan. Ram Leela is visually extravagant, sporting an amazing variety of colours, lighting and visual flair, showing off breathtaking and intricate dance sequences and exuding catchy and melodic music. For all its hype, grandeur, money, blood, sweat, music, tragedy, Ram Leela is a film that will be cherished forever in the history of Bollywood. Screenplay is good. Cinematography is good. The songs and Background Score is good.
Movie Analysis:
World's classic love stories Romeo-Juliet, Laila-Majnu, Heer-Ranjha, Shirin-Farhad, set in different cultures have one thing in common - the strong will to unite and remain together against all odds. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's latest creation Ram Leela is nothing you haven't seen or heard already, it is the old Romeo-Juliet romance, reworked and set against the backdrop of guns and vengeance. But this one will hit you right in the heart.Featuring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in the leads, Ram Leela is a high-voltage romantic drama, that will renew your faith in love. Cloaked in the violent love story, Ram Leela is a message that could not have been better timed.
Ram Leela is yet another SLB creation, replete with opulence and grandeur. In Ram Leela, the way Sanjay Leela Bhansali makes his characters react to each other and to the situations unfolding around them is what keeps you hooked. You get the feeling that he is losing his grip towards the end, but he comes right back and makes up for it. The filmmaker blends such moments of free-flowing sensitivity with the darker, murkier reality of blazing guns and furtive fornication without letting the sleaze touch the purity of the central romance. The movie Ram Leela is a visual masterpiece with a fresh treatment of a tragic love story. The film is paced very well due the placement of its fantastic musical numbers and is even supported by its fantastic visual variety. The strength of the film also comes from the gritty performances of its lead cast. The film pleases the eye and provides more than adequate satisfaction for those highly anticipating it.
Final View:
Overall, Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela has brilliance written all over it. One of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's finest. Yes, there are flaws but it isn't said for no reason that imperfections make a thing more real.
