Manchu Lakshmi and Others New Telugu Film Chandamama Kathalu Movie Review:

In an anthology film with eight stories, some are interesting, some are touchy, and some are not so interesting. Few sequences are very creative, few are routine. Quite a few scenes are illogical too. But Praveen Sattaru has tried to present a different movie with Chandamama Kathalu although anthology films are new to Telugu audiences.

Must say it is kind of novel effort. A writer narrating his stories, and they are unfolding on screen with an unusual end is novel to Telugu cinema. Also I stress that better handling of some stories would have made a lot of difference.

Story:

Chandamama Kathalu is an anthology of eight individual stories. People involved in these eight stories are Venkateswara Rao (Krishnudu) - a obese, Krishneswar Rao - an aspirational beggar, Lisa Smith (Lakshmi Manchu) - a falling model, Saritha (Aamani) - a widow and Mohan (Naresh) - Saritha's Ex-boy friend, Saradhi (Kishore) - a widower, Raghu (Chaitanya Krishna) - a college going guy, Ashraf (Abhijeet) - who runs a Kirana Store and Raghu (Naga Shaurya) - an accidental husband.

Artists Performance:

Of all the actors, it is Krishneswara Rao in the role of a beggar that makes strong impact. He is natural. Lakshmi Prasanna is suited well in the role of model. Kishore is another actor who leaves his mark. Naresh and Aamani in the roles of aged lovers are apt. Chaitanya Krishna gets noticed with his short role. Richa Panai, Abhijeet Pandla and Shamili Agarwal are okay.

Technical and Other Departments:

Of the music, the title song is good and haunting. Cinematography by Suresh is first rate. In fact, he has shown Hyderabad city in rather different light. Anthology films need effective editing and Dharmendra has done the job well. He should have trimmed some unnecessary scenes in the first half though.

Writer and director Praveen Sattaru proves that he has penchant for trying something different. He has shown his mark in many scenes. If he had focused on lesser characters with better etched out characters and given emotional touch to some sequences, Chandamama Kathalu would have a been a quite good movie.

Movie Analysis:

What is interesting in this anthology of the movie is the way the writer-director Praveen Sattaru has given a twist in the end. Many people may not get the final twist but the underlying theme is that there is no bigger creator/writer than the God. In fact the film's biggest strength is the final moments despite some stories fail to create any interest. Yes, first half of the movie moves at snail pace.

The beggar’s episode and the ending moments are the best. As I mentioned earlier, the premise is good but Praveen Sattaru has not etched the characters properly. The Krishnudu story is  silly. Nobody worries today if one doesn't get married at the age of 30. The story of Lisa Smith, the model, hardly has any novelty.

Final View:

Chandamama Kathalu is an anthology film with eight stories. Has its own moments, some interesting episodes too. But it is burdened with too many stories and some dull sequences.

Nara Rohit and Shubra Aiyappa New Telugu Film Prathinidhi Movie Review:

Nara Rohit, who is the Nephew of Nara Chandrababu Naidu, made his acting debut with hit film Banam and later proved his mettle as a commercial hero with the movie Solo. Fourteen months after the release of his last outing Okkadine, this young and talented actor is back with his next film Prathinidhi, which has released in theatres today (April 25). The trailer of the film has created lot of positive buzz, prior its release.

Story:

Manchodu Srinu (Nara Rohit) is a commoner who is vexed with the flawed political system. He decides to repair it and kidnaps the AP Chief Minister with the help of a minister's son. Unlike normal kidnappers, Srinu makes peculiar demands which expose the flaws in the system. He tries to make amends to those flaws with his demands. There occurs a twist towards the end of the film and it has to be watched on screen.

Artists Performance:

As Prathinidhi, Nara Rohit has delivered wonderful performance and he is the showman in the film. When looked at his previous movies, he has improved his acting in Prathinidhi. He will impress the viewers with his dialogue diction. Shubra Ayyappa has less scope and she has failed to use the available space to impress the viewers. Kota Srinivasa Rao, Posani, Sri Vishnu, Ravi Prakash and Jayaprakash Reddy have done their job well and their performances are the big assets of the film.

Technical and Other Departments:

Prathinidhi has decent production values and Sai Karthik's music is the main attraction in the technical front. His background score elevates several scenes. Chitti Babu's cinematography is another big strength of the film. The dialogues written by Prashanth Mandava are also good and among big assets of the movie. Nandhamuri Hari's editing is commendable.

Movie Analysis:

Prathinidhi is a political thriller with a few commercial ingredients. Nara Rohit's sterling performance is the main highlight in the film. Anand Ravi's interesting story, Prashanth Mandava's arresting narration and dialogues, Sai Karthik's music and Chitti Babu's camera work are other attractions of the film. The lack of entertainment quotient, poor execution of the script and a few illogical scenes are its drawbacks.Anand Ravi has written an innovative story for Prathinidhi and its concept is quite fresh and unique. The plot is based on a common man's struggle against the corrupt system. Director Prashanth Mandava has done a good screenplay out of this story and he has very good grip on the narration. But he seems to have taken certain things for granted. Especially, he has dealt the scene of kidnapping of the CM very lightly. He should have given it a more realistic touch.

Final View:

Finally, Prathinidhi ends up as an average. The film suffers due to the inexperience of a debut director lest it should be a super hit. The movie may sell well in the political heat of the state provided the publicity is good.

Allu Arjun and Shruthi Haasan New Telugu Film Race Gurram Movie Review:

Race Gurram is one of the most-talked about and highly-anticipated Telugu movies of 2014. The film has been creating positive buzz in the media, ever since it hit the floors. The promos of the film have soared up the viewers' expectations to the sky high. Released in theatres across the globe today (April 11), the movie has been receiving positive response from film goers. Superb performances and rich production values are its big assets.

Story:

Ram (Shaam) and Lucky (Allu Arjun) are brothers but both have sibling rivalry from childhood. Ram grows up to be an honest police officer, while Lucky turns out to be mischievous youth. Lucky completes his studies and hoping to go to USA for a job. He meets Spandana (Shruti) who is trained to control her emotions by her father (Prakash Raj). After some funny initial encounters, they get along well and fall in love. Meanwhile, there is a strong rowdy Siva Reddy (Ravi Kishan) who wants to be minister while Ram vows to prove that he is involved in many crimes. This leads to rift between them. Siva Reddy hatches a plan to kill Ram but wrongly attacks on Lucky. Then Lucky takes the matter on his hand to save his brother and his family.

Artists Performance:

Allu Arjun comes up with a fabulous performance as a racy youngster, chivalrous boyfriend and a family man. He has changed dialogue modulation and its excellent. His mannerisms and the way he says ‘daevudaa’ is cute. His dances are superb and his performance in action sequences is extraordinary. He matched the comedy timing of Brahmanandam in combination scenes. This film has given him excellent scope to give an allround performance.

Shruti Haasan plays the role of an unemotional and unresponsive girl who is transformed to a normal one. She is pretty good. Shaam is extremely fit as a cop and executed his role with finesse. Bhojpuri star Ravi Kishan played the role of main villain. He is good, but his characterization is eccentric. Prakash Raj plays a comical role with limited screen time. Posani Kishna Murali comes up with another entertaining performance. Brahmanandam is extremely good as ‘Kill Bill Pandey’ - a special cop. His entrance and screen presence creates a roller coaster ride of entertainment. Saloni plays love interest of Shaam. Ali does the role of fake doctor effectively again after Kick film. Jaya Prakash Reddy is good as chief cop. MS Narayana plays a delightful role in the first half.

Technical and Other Departments:

The basic story is about two brothers who fight with each other realizing the brotherhood when pitted against a baddie. The writer has added all possible commercial angles to the story. The screenplay is good in the second half. All characterizations in the film are good except for that of villain which is highly eccentric. Director Surender Reddy has made sure that he didn’t miss popular commercial elements in the movie, at the same time his technical standards are in tact. There are ups and lows in the narration, but he has made sure that he ended the film on a high note. It’s a good comeback for Surender Reddy.

Cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa is of top notch quality. Good color grading and nice visual effects added glitz to the visuals. Songs scored by SS Thaman are alright. But the background score in second half is very good (especially Allu Arjun’s bike entrance in a new avatar towards climax). Cinema Choopista is my favorite song. On the visuals front, I liked Boochade and Down Down. Picturization and art direction for these two songs is excellent. The placement of first two songs in second half is not good. But the title track towards climax is excellently shot. Art direction by Narayana Reddy deserves a special mention. Dialogues by Deepak Raj - Vikram Siri are very good and mostly entertaining. All action sequences are stylishly choreographed by Ram - Laxman. Editing by Gowtam Raju is fine. Production values by Nallamalupu Srinivas (Bujji) and Dr. Venkateswara Rao are of high standards.

Movie Analysis:
Initial half of the first half is entertaining. Interval fight is pretty heavy. Second half is neatly done. The last 20 minutes of the film which features Brahmanandam gives a high. Plus points of the movie are Allu Arjun, Brahmanandam, Cinematography, second half screenplay, all round orientation and production values. On the flip side, eccentric villain characterization and uneven tempo of the film should have been taken care of. On a whole, Race Gurram with it’s allround commercial elements should do well at box office! And watch out for Brahmi as ‘kill bill pandey’!

Final View:

Racegurram is regular commercial entertainer with dose of comedy in the second half. Allu Arjun and Kill Bill Pandey steal the show.

Amitabh Bachchan and Parth Bhalerao New Bollywood Bhoothnath Returns Movie Review:

The fad of funny ghosts seems to be catching up in Hindi cinema. Only recently we had Gang of Ghosts, a supposed comedy cum satire on the growing commercialisation of India and now we have yet another social satire, this time in the form of a sequel Bhootnath Returns. Sequel to the 2008 hit film Bhootnath, Bhootnath Returns promises to be funnier than its predecessor and also relevant to the current times.

Story:

Released strategically around the time when the election fever has gripped India, Bhootnath Returns is the story of a disappointed and embarrassed ghost Bhootnath (Amitabh Bachchan) who gets mocked in the Bhoot World for not being able to so much as even scare a child.
In his defense, he states that it was their flaut that the child could see him and demands another chance to redeem his lost reputation. He gets a chance to prove himself by scaring at least ten children and is sent back on Earth. However, sadly enough, he is too simple a ghost for children to be scared of him and what's sadder is that yet again, another child, Akhrot (Parth Bhalero) this time, can see him. Together they agree to help each other and their friendship sees them get involved in a cause that is bigger than they had ever imagined. To move ahead they will need to take on one of the country's most powerful and corrupt politician Bhau (Boman Irani). In a world, where a common man is afraid of politics, will a common man's ghost overcome his fear to stand up for what's right and fight against injustice?

Artists Performance:

The film works primarily for the entertaining pair of Big B with the little wonder Parth Bhalero. The little actor is spot on with his mannerisms, dialogues and acting. And it wouldn't be wrong to say that he outshines even Amitabh Bachchan in a few scenes. However, needless to mention that Sr. Bachchan too is perfect in his part. Boman Irani too adds to the much needed comic relief but his portion is more evil this time than comic.

Technical and Other Departments:

Music by various composers including Yo Yo Honey Singh and Meet Bros is average at best with only a song or two standing out. Screenplay is good.

Movie Analysis:

Director Nitesh Tiwari couldn't have chosen a better time to come out with a film that revolves around Politics and urges people in its own satirical way to vote. However, what starts out as an entertaining fair turns into a drag preachy dialogue which neither caters to the young minds nor to adults.

The movie starts off interestingly. The concept of a Bhoot World and the idea to send Bhootnath back to regain the fear that's required to be a "Bhoot" is refreshing and interesting. Even the point where Bhootnath decides to contest for elections for there isn't a rule anywhere that the candidate needs to be alive and the way he works his strategy around is all very interesting. However, the filmmaker stumbles in taking it all the way. Half way into the film and you are put through enough sermons and election advertisement urging you to vote for a change. That's when not just the pace of the film slumps but also your interest in it.

Final View:

Overall, Bhootnath Returns is not as witty or humorous as it appears from its trailers. A film that could be entertaining all the way had it not lost its plot.

Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt New Bollywood Film 2 States Movie Review:

After enough hoopla about the chemistry of Arjun and Alia in the film, their sizzling intimate scenes what with all the excessive kissing in the promos, their alleged ongoing off screen romance, 2 States, the official adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's best seller by the same name finally makes it to silver screen. But should it receive a thunderous response as did the book? We tell you.

Story:
Krish (Arjun Kapoor) is an average looking Punjabi boy from Delhi studying in IIM Ahmedabad who chances upon the most good looking girl in the institute Ananya (Alia Bhatt) a Tamil-Brahmin. Cupid strikes almost instantly but he holds his horses for she has been the center of attraction of every boy in the institute and he doesn't want to follow the herd. However, after a prolonged friendship he finally opens up only to be reciprocated favourably. Thus starts their lust turns love story and two are thrown into the whirlwind of North meets South when the two distinct families collide. Whether the societal and cultural differences get in the way or their love conquers all is what follows through the rest of the plot.

Artists Performance:

Alia Bhatt is a natural as a modern day, well educated Tamilian despite being all of 21 and only 2 films old and playing such a character for the first time. Not only does she appear extremely beautiful but also plays her part well. Arjun Kapoor switches from the evil streak that he has been portraying in all his previous films to play a reserved boy-next-door in this film. However, he completely fails to pull off the film on his shoulders. He just doesn't emote throughout the film not when he sweeps Ananya off her feet and neither when he becomes the punching bag of both families and Ananya too.
Acting by the side characters like Ronit Roy-Amrita Singh and Revathi-Shivkumar Subramanium is much more interesting. Amrita as the loud mouthed Punjabi mother while Revathi as the classical singing student and typical Tam-Bram mother are brilliant in their bits.

Technical and Other Departments:

There's hardly much to highlight in the cinematography as well as music. They are average at best. Direction and screenplay is good.

Movie Analysis:
This isn't the first time that a book is being adapted into a film. Filmmakers like Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Vishal Bhardwaj have done it time and again and very successfully. Book-adaptation too is an art if you come to think of it. One has to aesthetically bring to life the world and characters imagined by the readers and also add his/her creative input to take the book to another level as a film.

Director Abhishek Varman brings absolutely nothing new to the table. The film appears a point by point reenactment of the entire book with only an exception - all humorous bits either get excluded or dumbed down. The film is highly predictable and there's absolutely no fun in watching a dragged 149 minute long story which has nothing refreshing to offer.
There still are portions which work for the film, despite being few and far in between. The entry sequence of Amrita Singh followed by the humour that comes out of the meeting of parents from both sides is entertaining.

Final View:

Overall, 2 States is a wasted opportunity to encash the popularity of a book. Despite the cast, the budgets and brand in place, the film fails to make a mark purely due to faulty execution. Not a funny or entertaining rom-com this one.

Sampoornesh Babu New Telugu Film Hrudaya Kaleyam Movie Review:

Director Steven Shankar's latest directorial venture Hrudaya Kaleyam is a comedy action entertainer movie, which has hit the marquee today (April 4). Burning Star Sampoornesh Babu and Ishika Singh have played the lead roles in the film, which has been produced by Sai Rajesh Neelam under the banner of Amrutha Productions. RK has scored music for the songs, while Srikanth Pendyala has composed the background score.

Story:

Sampoornesh Babu (Sampoornesh Babu) is a thief who steals various items from electronic shops and provisional stores. A battalion of cops headed by Bhairav Rathore (Mahesh Kathi) are searching for this mysterious thief who leaves no clues. A dangerous looking Black Mamba is frantically searching for Sampoornesh Babu. The rest of the story is all about why Sampoornesh Babu is stealing and what happens when cops catches him.

Artists Performance:

Sampoornesh Babu has funny looks. But those funny looks are not enough. He needs a good characterization and a director who can project him well. The image and following created for Sampoornesh Babu in social media has so much influenced the viewers that whatever he does on screen turned out into a great performance. This film will create a new genre and Sampoornesh Babu should nurture his career by acting selectively in films where the director can produce magic with him. If he accepts a couple of mediocre projects, he will be forgotten as hero. He has the special talent of dancing in a funny way as well as in a professional style as well.
New actress Kavya Kumar has a bit of features of actress Roja (pouting lips and similar eye/eyebrows). She does a decent job and her dubbing is cute. Kathi Mahesh is impressive as a short and funny police commissioner Bhairav who has a thing for smelling. Guru Charan played the role of doctor. Most of the actors in the film are new. Ishika Singh did a glamorous role.

Technical and Other Departments:

Most of the writers for commercial films write with a purpose of making a great film and they end up delivering illogical film. This story takes a potshot at those serious shot films. Hence the writer has deliberately has written illogical scenes and silly dialogues. And they worked amazingly on the screen with right characterization and with the casting of Sampoornesh Babu. Writing such deliberate illogical story and convincing it is very difficult for any director. First timer Sai Rajesh (Steven Shankar) succeeds as a writer first and then as a director. There are timely and well intended references to films like Samarasimha Reddy (cop saluting hero), Daddy (hero’s profession in flashback), Bommarillu (love episodes), Black Mamba (Kill Bill) etc. The pre-climax episodes appear bizarre, but is followed up with a nice climax. The director has also given right explanation why this movie is titled ‘Hrudaya Kaleyam’ and why Sampoornesh Babu is called ‘burning star’. The statutory warnings that come at bottom of screen are creative.

The major asset of the film fun dialogues written by the director himself. There are several witty liners like ‘Thalam Thailand vaadu cheste, danni baddhalu kotte brain bharateeyudidi”, “Aakarshana bed room ki velte teeripotundi, kaani prema smasanam varaku venta vuntundi’, “Snehithudante evaru? Snehitudu kathi tho podisthe, Naa snehithudu naa pottalo katthi dachukunnadu ani cheptharaa” etc. Music and background score by RK is good. Most of the songs have ample scope for Sampoo dances. Cinematography by Chiranjeevi is decent compared to the limited resources budget allows. The effects used for hero introduction and build-up shots are good. Stunts composed by Stunt Joshua are effective. Editing by Karthika Srinivas is fine. Producer and director Sai Rajesh should explore making this a franchize series as it’s a new genre and will become a popular genre in years to come.

Movie Analysis:

Hrudaya Kaleyam is first straight film in Telugu in this genre (Sudigaadu was little similar, but was a remake). One has to be tuned to Sampoornesh Babu and Hrudaya Kaleyam teasers in order to enjoy the film to fullest. The theater I have seen (INOX, GVK) is full with people who came to theaters after getting impressed with trailers. They started chanting Sampoo name and going through the motions of hero throughout. Few of them dances in the songs and a few of them jumped out of chairs in the climax. Hrudaya Kaleyam is a film that should be watched in theater to enjoy it because the shouts and chants of fellow moviegoers are as entertaining as the content on the screen.

Final View:

Watch it on a big screen and watch it with crowds. If you liked the trailers of Hrudaya Kaleyam, it’s a must watch film for you in theater!

Varun Dhawan,Ileana D'Cruz & Nargis Fakhri New Bollywood Film Main Tera Hero Movie Review:

The movie is at times slapstick, at times dramatic, at times action-packed and at times romantic but all times funny and entertaining, reminding you of those comedies of the yore where David Dhawan was at his best.

Story:

On being flunked by his professor in college, Sreenath Prasad aka Seenu (Varun Dhawan), the highly notorious boy of the entire Ooty decides to take matters to hand and moves to Bangalore to pursue further schooling. On the first day of college itself Seenu falls for Sunaina (Illeana D'cruz) the most dreaded girl in the entire college for she has an obsessive lover Angad (Arunoday Singh) pursuing her like since forever and has threatened every boy in sight to never so much as even look at her.
As Seenu tries to tackle Angad comes another problem - Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri), daughter of a dreaded gangster (Anupam Kher), who is completely smitten by Seenu ever since he saved her from goons and wants him at any cost. How he tackles both Angad and Ayesha to work his way towards Sunaina is what follows through the rest of the plot.

Artists Performance:

What's best about Main Tera Hero is that you don't see any actor being wasted. Even the likes of Rajpal Yadav are involved in the script meticulously. Arunoday Singh, Nargis Fakhri and Illeana D'cruz too act well and play their parts convincingly but all get over shadowed by Varun Dhawan.

Technical and Other Departmnets:

Music by Sajid-Wajid is breezy and foottaping especially songs like Besharmi ki height and Shanicar Rati which have already become chartbusters. Background score is good. Screenplay and Cinemautography is good.

Movie Analysis:

David Dhawan who teamed best with Govinda and Salman Khan making audiences chuckle with funny characters, personality traits of people, situations and his famous one liners and PJs struggled in between with his comedies either being borrowed from the West or simply unfunny. However, with Main Tera Hero he redeems himself and reinstates that he still is the King of Comedy. It's as if he was saving his best for the movie with his son.

While daddy dearest puts up a movie that has all the masala for a commercial blockbuster right from romance to action to drama and above all some rib tickling comedy, son Varun too complements his father's efforts well with a performance that actually establishes him as the future superstar. Varun blends so well in David Dhawan's style of filmmaking as if he is Govinda's newage version only highly upgraded. This Govinda version 2.0 not only is extremely confident onscreen but has dancing skills and acting abilities to vie for. The young star outshines even the seasoned actors like Sourabh Shukla an d Anupam Kher who are hilarious in their own way.

Final View:

After years one has seen a film complete with all elements of a commercial caper and yet not tripe or boring. A thoroughly entertaining film, Main Tera Hero is a must watch.

Mohan Babu & Vishnu New Telugu Film Rowdy Movie Review:

Rowdy has been creating positive buzz in the media, ever since Ram Gopal Varma launched it. In addition, its promos have not only garnered great response from fans, but also soared up the movie lovers' expectations to the sky high. The movie, which has released in theatres across Telangana and Seemandhra today (April 4), will not disappoint the audience from what they have been hearing about this film.

Story:

Rowdy is set in Rayalaseema region. A faction leader in Seema is revered by his people as Annagaaru (Mohan Babu). He has two sons - elder son Bhushan (Kishore) and younger son Krishna (Vishnu). Bhushan is full of vices, while Krishna is upright guy like his father. A rival group hatches a plan to kill Annagaaru as he is against the Nandavaram project. The contractors of Nandavaram project attack Annagaaru but he survives. Rest of the film is how younger son takes on the rival group.

Artists Performance:
Mohan Babu comes up with natural performance and controlled dialogue delivery. This film will become a good addition to his portfolio. Mohan Babu shows his conviction as an actor and excels with natural performance. The way he pronounces respect as ‘raspect’ is superb. Vishnu did a role that has no heroism in first half, but rises to the occasion from interval. He impressed with controlled dialogue delivery and subtle performance. Shanvi has a limited role and does justice. Jayasudha is nice. Kishore is very good as a bad son. Paruchuri Venkateswara Rao did a vital role and he is satisfactory. Tanikella Bharani’s vedantham dialogues and freezing expression after each of those dialogues didn’t workout. Ravi Babu is excellent as cop. Gajendra Naidu (one of the producers of the film) did a role of hero’s follower and he is pretty good.

Technical and Other Departments:

The basic story and plot of remind us of RGV’s Sarkar which is inspired by Godfather. The initial scene of hero helping a poor man and the hospital episodes remind us of Godfather. Ram Gopal Varma has concentrated on building family bonding at one end and has shown fights and violent attacks parallelly. The twist that comes towards end of the film is also good. However, the tempo in second half should have been more gripping.
Dialogues by Gangothri Vishwanadh are apt. Cinematography by Satish Muthyala is good. Ram Gopal Varma who started using weird angles/shots from Rann film has made sure that camera work is proper and traditional in Rowdy. Warm tone to the visuals added to the feel of the movie. Songs and background music by Sai Karthik is in Ram Gopal Varma’s style. Stunts composed by Ram Sunkara are fiery though a lot of violent at times. New producers should be commended for making a film with a realistic tone to it.

Movie Analysis:

Mohan Babu is a superb actor. After M Dharmaraju MA and Rayalaseema Ramanna Chowdary, this is the most compelling character he has done in his career. It took a director of Ram Gopal Varma calibre to present Mohan Babu in natural avatar. Plus points of the film are Mohan Babu, Vishnu Manchu, and their characterizations. On the flipside a toned-down violence and a compelling second half would have made the movie more universal. On a whole, Rowdy is a special film that adds a feather to the cap of Mohan Babu.

Final View:

Rowdy shows us that Ram Gopal Varma is not tired of telling us  Godfather again and again. This film is a remix of his Sarkar and Sarkar Raj, only Mohan Babu's performance is saving grace. Rest gives you nothing but déjà vu feeling.
